Pattern 1382 Spode bone china Bute shape Coffee Can in another Japanese Imari inspired design introduced c1809. This is a little beauty and I love all the green enamel ground with its tiny black spots but wouldn't have liked the job of painting the spots! The stylised leaves look like ocean waves and is this a Chrysanthemum flower? All hand-painted what a treasure.
This design had been produced by Minton c1800 as their pattern number 178. There were very few copyright laws at this time & any popular designs were soon copied by other manufacturers & Josiah Spode II was no exception.
A little smudge of red enamel on the inside & a lovely Spode kinked handle solidly gilded on the outside
What beautiful Georgian colours, this would have looked lovely by candlelight
Clean inside with just one speck of kiln dust
Marked to its base with 'No 1382' in iron-red enamel, it is very rare to see the prefix 'No' on Spode pieces.
Here is another pattern 1382 Spode bone china Bute shape Coffee Can & with its matching Saucer this time. You can now see how dramatic & impressive this Georgian design of c1809 was and no doubt it created quite a strong, fashionable impression when it was introduced.
Both of these pieces have their pattern number '1382' in red enamel on their bases & the saucer also has 'SPODE' hand-painted in capital letters. These bases look very clean & blemish free.
