Pattern 1383 Spode bone china Bute shape Trio decorated in a gilt scallop shell design with tiny puce coloured enamel spots around their perimeters, this was introduced c1809 & would have been dazzling when new. Josiah Spode II's fantastically white bone china & Henry Daniel's skilled gilders produced a masterpiece. The Napoleonic Wars were still raging and fierce competition between UK ceramic manufacturers for the diminished trade was driving both quality & pricing.
The Bute shape Tea Cup was obviously used far more frequently than the Coffee Can (perhaps the owner didn't like coffee) & therefore is rather lacking gilt on its handle & top rim. Saucers are nearly always seen with at least some wear to the central area because these cups & cans slid around so much without the central well to contain them. It's a wonder that many of them survived at all!
There are no makers marks on any piece but do notice how nice & blemish free these pieces are. Spode were perfecting their bone china porcelain manufacturing processes by 1809.
