Pattern 1388 Spode bone china 'Antique beaded Beaker', otherwise known as a Vase or a Jar introduced at Spode c1809. This is a lovely item which has a different pattern on every side & would probably have been part of a garniture to stand either side & centre of a mantlepiece. If the mantlepiece had a mirror above, which was often the case, then the design on the back of the vase would have been reflected in it and the full beauty of this object could be seen by all admirers.
The word 'Jar' is an English shortened version of the French word 'Jardiniere'.
This pretty Spode Vase is all hand-painted & gilded using an apple green enamel ground with tiny black spots teamed with cerise & orange stylised leaves & flowers together with elaborate & varied gilding patterns. This was a chance for Henry Daniel's gilders to showcase their skills.
Choosing which side to view is quite a dilemma. Short of having a suitable mantlepiece & large mirror (together with the rest of the garniture) I have decided that all this object needs is a small mirror backed area. One of those modern white boxes that you can put on a wall would look great, or even better a set of non symmetrical boxes - I need more Spode vases! Something to work on.
This vase stands at approximately 6.25 inches or just under 16 cms tall & it measures 5 inches or just under 13 cms across the top rim.
Clean inside
This vase is marked to its base with 'SPODE' & its pattern number '1388' in iron red enamel.
