Pattern 1446 Spode bone china, double indented shape, Dessert Plate decorated in a wonderfully traditional Imari design using eye-popping enamels & rich gilding; this hand painted design was introduced into the Spode range c1809.
I absolutely love the combination of iron-red/orange and turquoise/green enamels. The central area is a pot of peony flowers & foliage standing on a fenced terrace and the surrounding border is divided into alternating panels of more flowers and stylised naturalistic scenes of gnarled pine trees & herons?
The base of this Dessert Plate is just as you would expect to find it. The decoration has been continued underneath the plate with sprigs of Prunus Blossom, copying exactly the original 18th century Oriental Export porcelain pieces which had arrived in the UK via the East India Trading Company some years previously. The only difference being on this example, is the Spode pattern number '1446' written in gilt.
