Pattern 1603 Spode bone china Bute shape Coffee Can & Saucer decorated with a border of gilt Anthemion or Palmettes. This decorative motif was developed in ancient Greece from an earlier Egyptian & Asiatic form of decoration. The Romans also used this motif which is derived from the radiating petals of honeysuckle or lotus palmette. During the 18th & 19th centuries this same motif was used in much European Neoclassical architectural & ceramic ornamentation. This design was introduced c1810.
This is a nice example with just a stray mark of some sort in the centre of the saucer. The gilding looks rich & beautiful & the saucer centre is not too worn even though there is no central 'well' design yet. At this date Josiah Spode II's bone china was the best that money could buy in England.
A lovely Neoclassical inspired set
The can is reasonably clear inside
Sadly this coffee can has a crack across its base. Neither pieces have any pattern numbers or decorator's marks
