Pattern 1695 Spode bone china Coffee Can bat printed in gold onto a cobalt blue ground with Landscapes & further bands of gold decoration, this was introduced at Spode in 1811. This design can look very sumptuous & when new would have been sensational but it is rather prone to scratch damage unfortunately like all over-glaze decorated pieces. It would have been an expensive pattern to produce and I believe there were only four variations of these particular patterns produced in this manner by Spode.
This print is P274 (HS) Horden House, Oxfordshire, home of Mrs Harwood and the original drawing was by Richard Corbould (1757-1831) and was published in Copperplate Magazine in 1792. This has been seen previously on Spode patterns 557 & 558 charcoal bat printed bone china tea wares.
Spode's bat printed gold designs were pattern numbers 1693 'Gold landscapes on blue panel', 1695 'Gold landscapes on blue panel with added gilding' (this one), 1697 'Gold landscapes on blue panel with egg & tongue gilding' & 1703 'Gold landscapes with gilding'.
Peter Warburton of New Hall porcelain factory had taken out a patent in 1810 on his gold printing decoration which was to last for 14 years which would explain why Spode did not produce many designs in this manner & when he did he chose not to mark them as Spode's.
I'm still finding spots of kiln dust here and there, it really was unavoidable in 1811.
