Pattern 1928 Spode bone china Slop Bowl hand-painted with puce coloured decoration which looks like arrow fletching feathers together with iron-red & gilt leaves & bands. This pretty design was introduced by Spode c1812. The Slop Bowl itself is in the early Bute shape which was quickly superseded around 1813-1818 by the London shape which is more angular to match the cups of that design.
This Spode Slop Bowl came to me from a dealer based in London, Ontario, Canada.
The interior is almost blemish free & only slightly scratched, not bad at all considering its age & the fact that it was made to be used.
Nicely marked on its base with both 'SPODE' & its pattern number '1928' written in red enamel.
Scottish Antiques sold a Copeland Spode Bute shape Tea Cup & Saucer plus Tea Plate in a very similar pattern a while ago & interestingly it was marked on its base with the pattern number 3659 & a printed Copeland back-stamp dating to c1883. The only difference in the design appears to be in the gilding, presumably it was a popular pattern that was re-introduced c1824 as pattern 3659 with a slight variation & then reproduced again in the 1880's. All this from a design first introduced at Spode c1812.
What I also found interesting was the fact that Spode c1883 reproduced a replica c1824 cup & saucer without a well, just as it would have been 60 years earlier (& 70+ years for the original pattern 1928). Perhaps it was a celebration of the design's history. Spode saucers for tea & coffee didn't have a well in their centre until c1825-1826 (only special Chocolate Cups & Saucers had a well to stop spillage).
