Pattern 2436 Spode bone china Bute shape Coffee Can decorated using the 'Pluck & Dust' method with a print known as the 'Convolvulus Border' P525 introduced by Josiah Spode II c.1816.  The pure white bone china porcelain together with the dark red enamel colour glows with the addition of a solid gilt ground.
On 14th May 1816 a shipment comprising of two Spode Tea & Breakfast Services one in pattern 2436 & the other in pattern 2435 was consigned by Robert Boardman of Liverpool on board a ship named the Coromandel & captained by William Day destined for Philadelphia, USA.
200 years later the pattern 2436 Spode service was put up for auction at Downingtown, Pennsylvania, just 40 miles from where it had first arrived in the USA. A consortium of Spode Society members was able to purchase this service & the original shipping documentation & have donated some of these pieces plus the original shipping document to The Spode Museum Trust for exhibition at the Spode Works.
Interestingly the pattern 2435 Spode service is now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, USA and can be seen here if you search for 'SPODE'   http://www.philamuseum.org/collections/search.html
Pattern 2435 Spode bone china service has bat printed scenes of c1812 Contemporary & Classical Humanity which were printed in charcoal enamel and were first seen on Spode pattern 1922 pieces.  In pattern 2435 these bat printed scenes are embellished with a lovely gilt border.
No doubt a Tea Service in this pattern would have looked wonderful when new.
The inside looks nice and clean & the glint of gold is delightful
The base of this can displays the red printed 'Spode' backstamp which sometimes appears on Pluck & Dust printed pieces of this period c1816.  Notice how the print has been wrapped around the inside top of the handle, this is normal Spode practice.
