Pattern 3059 Spode bone china London shape Coffee Cup & Saucer decorated profusely in a rich Japanese design using traditional Imari colours. This pattern was produced c1820 by Spode.
Miles Mason of Masons Ironstone fame also produced this pattern & I believe it is known as Mason's Basket Japan pattern. This pattern was one of Mason's most well known Imari inspired patterns. It was also called "India Flower Basket Japan" in the 1818-1822 Mason auction lists. Although Mason churned out masses of tableware in this pattern (the most ubiquitous being Hydra Jugs), this pattern is extremely uncommon to Spode. I had never seen this pattern produced by Spode until fairly recently.
The Coffee Cup has the usual Josiah Spode II gilding pattern down the length of its handle.
Are the flowers Lotus & Chrysanthemum, I'm not sure but perhaps they are?
The enamel colours are cobalt blue, iron red & orange together with lots of rich gilding. I love the extra decorative detail to the inside of the cup. This is a fabulous Spode coffee cup & saucer.
The Coffee Cup is only marked with the word 'SPODE' which is an unusual way of marking this piece when it was clearly one of their own patterns being produced. Very frequently if you see a piece of porcelain only marked 'SPODE' it's because it was a replacement piece requested by a customer & the original would have been made by another manufacturer.
Josiah Spode II was always very willing to produce replacement pieces & many of his designs would have been copied from producing these objects particularly in respect of Chinese & Japanese Export porcelains.
The Saucer has the more usual Spode marking to its base with both the word "SPODE' in capitals & the pattern number '3059' in red enamel.
