Pattern 333 Spode bone china Old Oval shape Sugar Box hand-painted en grisaille with flower swags & rich gilding. This pattern was produced by Josiah Spode II c1802 & it is a variation of their pattern 319.

It manages to look opulent with only one drab enamel colour & lots of gilding!

Unfortunately this Spode Sugar Box has seen better days, but with its lid on it still displays very well.

Here you can see how the lid was shaped to fit the base without too much movement.

The base of the sugar box has an impressed potter's number & you can see faint lines across its base where it has sat in a saggar whilst in the kiln. This looks completely 'right' for early Spode bone china pieces. There is another mark to the left but having enlarged it, I still cannot make anything out of it.
