Pattern 341 Spode New Oval shape bone china Creamer decorated very simply with gilt band, line & a line of 'leaf form' which was the easiest and simplest border a gilder could make using a brush. The decoration looks lovely against Spode's translucent, dramatically white & physically light bone china and it would have been impressively transformative compared to the earthenware objects it would go on to supersede. It looked superior & it was superior.
This pattern was introduced by Josiah Spode II c1802 however the New Oval shape was introduced c1805.
Obviously there was always going to be the odd speck of kiln dust during these early days. Wear to the gilding around the base can be seen on this side, presumably the owner was right-handed & used their little finger out-stretched to support the creamer.
I doubt that I will look as good when I am 200+ years old!
The little gilt dots down the centre of the handle have rubbed away with wear but you can just see where they were. This Creamer's gilt pattern down its handle is the same size as the pattern seen on the matching bute shape cups & cans of this period. Either the gilder made a mistake or a management decision was made to increase the length of this gilding pattern so it stretched further down the handle, which looks more elegant.
A stain inside and some kiln dust particles
It is not marked to its base which for early pieces of Spode bone china is very common.
