Pattern 459 Spode bone china Bute shape Coffee Can produced by Josiah Spode II c1803. The design is a simple hand-painted flower plus leaves in charcoal, iron-red & green enamels together with gilt leafy swags. The last photograph shows how this flower develops into a 'pheasant eye' or 'fuchsia' type which hangs down.
The usual Spode gilding down the kinked handle
This Coffee Can has picked up a large speck of kiln dust during firing but porcelain was very precious and it was still considered good enough to decorate.
All hand-painted with enamels & gilt, I think of this design as a 'Fuchsia' or 'Pheasant Eye' type. Josiah Spode II went on to produce several variations of this design which appear later in the pattern range, in fact he did this with many of his popular designs.
