Pattern 486 Spode bone china Bute shape Tea Cup & matching Coffee Can introduced by Josiah Spode II c1803. The design incorporates a spray of English flowers hand-painted on each side including roses & forget-me-nots plus a tiny spray in-between the two. This is a very pretty design.
The signature Spode gilding pattern down the kinked handle. What an excellent salesman Josiah Spode II was; he was a brand creator long before brands were ever conceived.
A pretty pair, just a matching saucer required! If you have a matching saucer I would love to know about it.
More pretty flowers, what a delight these are!
Clean inside with just the occasional tiny blemishes
This delightful pair also have their pattern number '486' hand-painted in gilt on their bases. The use of gilt for writing pattern numbers on bases was discouraged in later years by Spode II due to the extra cost of production & iron-red enamel was used instead. So if you see a pattern number in gilt you can be pretty sure that it is an early piece of Spode.
What little beauties these orphan tea cups are. Perhaps Richard Brendon should introduce saucers as well as lustre tea cups into his range of Reflect ceramics. See here:
