Pattern 487 Spode bone china Old Oval shape Sugar Box (sadly A/F) produced by Josiah Spode II c1803. The design repeats small, hand-painted, simple floral sprigs in an orderly way, again looking French in its origins. It is colourful & pretty. Iron-red, puce, green & the popular yellow enamel colours are used for its decoration together with bands of gilding. All these different colours would have involved many separate firings in their bottle kilns & thus expense.
Spode's Old Oval Sugar Box had what appeared to be ring handles either side but they were moulded solidly to the object & didn't lift away from the sides.
Sadly the lid has been broken at some time in its history but perhaps it deserves a better repair
The pattern number 'N487' can just be seen written in gilt to the base of this Sugar Box. The use of 'N' or 'No' is uncommon on Spode pieces. Numbers are also often seen impressed into the body of the china base. Here you can see '90' which may have been a potter's mark or a numerical system to match up lids & bases with each other.
