Pattern 963 Spode bone china Bute shape Coffee Can introduced c1806. This is another Chinese or Japanese Imari design probably copied from an original piece of 18th century Export porcelain. It is all hand-painted & decorated over most of its outer surface and has even more gilding than previous designs. The enamel colours are again iron-red & cobalt blue with just a touch of green sneaking in (search for the pair of birds).
Searching for the pair of green birds reminds me of 'Where's Wally' (top right in this photograph)
Here they are again at top left; isn't it a lovely piece!
The National Trust have a Spode pattern 963 London shape Tea Cup & Saucer in their Collections (located at Hinton Ampler, Hampshire) which would date from c1813 when the Spode London shape was introduced see it here: http://www.nationaltrustcollections.org.uk/object/1529430.3
Within about 5-7 years of the introduction of the London shape Spode's Bute shape tea wares were no longer in fashion. Spode's bone china bute shape tea wares were only produced from 1799 to about 1820 so they are very special pieces of English history.
The design is an Oriental pot of flowers on a fenced garden terrace. It was a very popular design reproduced many times over by both Chinese & Japanese Imari decorators & British ceramic manufacturers as well. Coalport, Davenport, Derby, Masons, Minton, Ridgway, Wedgwood & Worcester all produced Imari designs as well as many of the less well-known English manufacturers.
Nice, white & clean porcelain inside
No signs of the pattern number or the decorator on this piece which is still usual for this period
