Spode's Etruscan shape Coffee Cup & Saucer decorated with the blue print P812-2 Peplow II. The first Peplow centre was re-engraved c1819-20 and the border was changed to a wider star design & the supporting floral border was incorporated into it & at the same time the inner Nankin border was omitted. It was also around this time that Spode's Etruscan shape was introduced; Robert Copeland places the date c1823.
This particular saucer has a well to contain the base of the cup so this would have been produced c1825/26. You can also find this Peplow II design on saucers without a well.
Spode's handle shape for the Etruscan design was based on a serpent and this became very popular. Coalport also produced the same shape and it reached the height of its popularity c1825.
Clean inside the cup, the saucer has a couple of manufacturer's fault marks, just slight specks in the ceramic by the Chinese vase.
Both pieces are marked to their bases with the blue printed 'SPODE' backstamp, this was the most commonly printed mark for both earthenware and bone china prints and it was used from c1810 until 1833 (the end of Spode ownership).
